Beavers and aspen.

This is interesting. In one of the areas inhabitated by beavers at Bamff was a group of 12 aspen trees, planted in 1992. In 2002, they were all cut down by the beavers. In 2011, this is what has regrown. The original 12 stems have now been replaced with 90. They are a bit damaged by roe deer, but the beavers are leaving them be, despite there being more beavers than ever.

This little group of stems have arisen from where one tree had been cut down.

I wonder how many will regrow next time they are cut down?

Lesson:  Beavers cutting aspen trees down is not necessarily a bad thing....in this case, the aspen have only benefitted from it.
