Aspen is now starting to come in to leaf. The aspen in Aberfeldy's Poplar Avenue, above, is well progressed, and probably means it is not off Scottish origin, but scroll down a bit and you will see other genuinely native Scottish aspens which are not too far behind. Many clones are not showing yet at all. Aspen is a pioneer species, and must once have had a very wide genetic base, and this wide difference between clones coming in to leaf is just part of that genetic variability.....
