This image is from Oulanka National Park, just South of the Arctic Circle within a couple of km of Russian border. The figure in the middle is Ern Emmett of Highland Aspen Group fame. The trees are of course aspen, and they are massive. For more information on this area see:
Aspen is the only broad leaf to compete with Picea (spruce) and P. sylv (Scots Pine) in this area. Notice how white the aspen trees are.
