These photos are from Invermark estate in Glen Esk in the Angus Glens, where we got 9clones on Friday. Knowledge of aspen in the Angus Glens is very poor, but getting these root sections in to propogation should raise the profile and stimulate interest in that area. We know that aspen is located throughout the Angus Glens and hopefully knowledge of the species in that area will start to accumulate now.
Thanks to Ian Christie of Invermark for helping me on Friday. Invermark are doing some native woodland plantings next year within some clearfelled conifer areas, and we will try to return them some native aspen planting stock.
Ian had some of their clones fenced off specifically to get them to regenerate. He was also aware of the story of Jesus being crucified on a cross of aspen, this being why it was often planted in church yards, like at Maule Church further down the glen.

What great photos! Long ago I worked at Cairncross for Alastair Skene and so remember the birch woods of Glenesk very well, though they were too often in a state of decline in those days (1977), being grazed by sheep, deer and rabbits.
Your section on aspen is particularly interesting.
